Interview on phone can be a little tough as compared to the traditional interviewstrategies, as in this kind of interview visual communication is missing. Sometimes it leads to the face-to-face interview and sometimes it is the only tool to choose a candidate when the applicant is far distant from the company. It saves the precious time of interviewer and they take quick decision for selection process.
Though in phone interview, visual communication is not available to both persons (interviewer and interviewee), so it needs to be a little more careful and prepared for phone interview. It may be either expected or unexpectedinterview call, but make all possible preparations for it.
Preparation before Interview:
- Make all necessary material available near you including pen, notepad, watch/clock and a glass of water. You may need to drink water to clear your throat.
- Keep a fresh copy of your resume open near your hands which you had sent to the employer. It is better to open it as a webpage.
- It is always good to search about the employer you are applying to. It is helpful to keep the known information file open near you.
- Shift to the room or any place that is free of all distractions. There should not be any interruption and noise around you. It may create disturbance during the call.
- If you are in habit to walk and talk on phone, define a rout for you.
- Practice makes everything perfect. You must practice the answers of expected question. Most of the questions are common in all kind of interviews and practice makes a huge difference. You can also arrange some questions that you want to ask from the interviewer.
- Before you call from employer, make sure that you are comfortable and in good mood. Though employer is not seeing you but your rough mood to aggressive attitude can be realized very easily. So keep your nerves under best control and asmiley, cheerful attitude during the whole interview.
- Dressing matters a lot on your personality in all aspects. It deeply affects and changes the approach of your thoughts, voice, personality and everything. Tight clothing will keep you active and professional in talk. It’s true.
- Don’t keep anything in your mouth during the call, like chewing gum, cigarette, food or even cap of your pen. It creates awkward sounds during talk
- If your mobile phone is set on Call Waiting option, it is necessary to disable it. Otherwise, if you get some call during the interview, it can easily take your concentration away from the employer’s question. If Call Waiting was not disabled before, simply ignore the call.
- If you are wearing ear-rings, remove them before you get call. Ear-rings make adjustment of cell phone or headphone on your ear difficult and create unwanted noise sounds in call.
- Fully concentrate and listen to the questions and then answer carefully. Don’t ask to repeat the question every time. It may make the interviewer irritated.
- On a phone interview, when there is only the vocal communication, it may be hard to understand where to stop speaking and you may continue to speak more when the interviewer may be expecting to finish.
- Speak slowly and softly. Take a pause when the employer finishes the question. Similarly give a little pause when you complete one answer. It helps both the persons to understand each other’s communication without interrupting.
- End the call by saying the thanks words for their time and don’t forget to ask the name of your interviewer at the end, if you forgot to ask on the start.
Take notes for your interview and now prepare to send a thank note to the interviewer. It increases your worth in front of employer for your professionalism.
